Lipstick Under My Burkha is part of an on-going wave of films that celebrate the emergence of the New Woman in contemporary India. Focusing on the lives of four women from a cross section of Indian society, director Alankrita Shrivastava constructs an inclusive and empowering representation of female resistance, disruption and solidarity. The film faced a battle with censors, leading to a delay in the release of the film. However, widespread critical acclaim meant the film went on to become an unexpected box office hit.
